In the early 1990s, researchers at the New York Aquarium placed a mirror in front of a bottlenose dolphin. The dolphin did not treat the reflection as another animal, which is what most creatures do. Instead, it used the mirror to investigate parts of its own body — turning to examine marks that researchers had placed on its skin, spending far more time near the mirror when marked than when unmarked. The dolphin knew it was looking at itself.

This is called the mirror test, and it is one of the most demanding cognitive benchmarks studied by researchers at agencies such as NOAA Fisheries, which tracks marine mammal cognition and conservation. Passing it requires not just intelligence but something closer to self-awareness — a mental model of oneself as a distinct entity. Aside from dolphins, only great apes, elephants, and some corvids have reliably passed it. Most animals, including dogs, fail. The fact that dolphins pass is not a curiosity. It is a signal that something unusual is going on inside that large, smooth head.

A Sense We Do Not Have

Before considering what dolphins think, it is worth pausing on how they perceive the world. Dolphins navigate, hunt, and communicate largely through echolocation — they emit a rapid series of clicks and read the returning echoes with astonishing precision. They can detect objects the size of a ping pong ball at distances of more than 100 metres. They can distinguish between different metals. They can, apparently, perceive the internal structure of objects, because sound passes through soft tissue in ways that light does not.

This means that when a dolphin looks at a pregnant female, it may be able to detect the foetus. When it looks at a human diver, it may perceive the skeleton. We have no frame of reference for this. Echolocation creates a kind of perception that has no equivalent in human experience, and it underpins a social world far more complex than it looks from the surface.

Friendships, Alliances, and Politics

Long-term studies of wild dolphin populations — particularly the project in Shark Bay, Western Australia, which has been running since 1984 — have revealed social structures of startling complexity. Male dolphins form alliances, sometimes three-way coalitions, to compete for access to females. These alliances can hold together for decades. Males remember who helped them in the past and appear to reciprocate. Dolphins that have not seen each other for years recognise each other by signature whistles — unique vocalisations, essentially names, that each dolphin develops in infancy and retains for life.

Females form separate social networks with their own hierarchies. Mothers invest heavily in their calves, nursing them for up to three years and maintaining close relationships with adult offspring long after. Some behaviours — such as using a marine sponge as a tool to protect the snout while foraging on the seafloor — are passed from mother to daughter across generations. This is cultural transmission: information spread not through genes but through social learning, which was once thought to be a defining feature of human society.

Grief and Empathy

Dolphin mothers have been observed carrying dead calves for days, sometimes weeks, after their deaths. They support the bodies at the surface, preventing them from sinking, and continue to return to them after short absences. Whether this constitutes grief in any sense comparable to human mourning is a question researchers are careful not to answer definitively. But the behaviour is not easily explained by any mechanism other than an inability or unwillingness to accept the loss.

Dolphins also help individuals in distress, including members of other species. There are well-documented cases of dolphins supporting injured companions at the surface so they can breathe, and at least one case of dolphins herding a human swimmer away from a shark before she had registered the danger herself. Whether these actions reflect something like empathy, or are better explained by other mechanisms, is still being studied. The pattern is consistent enough that it cannot be easily dismissed.

What We Do With This Knowledge

Dolphins are still kept in captivity for entertainment in many countries. They are still caught in fishing nets in large numbers — estimates suggest hundreds of thousands die as bycatch annually. In some places, they are still hunted directly. The scientific evidence about their intelligence does not automatically determine how we should treat them. But it does change the terms of the conversation. The question is no longer simply whether dolphins are clever animals. It is whether creatures capable of self-recognition, long-term social memory, cultural learning, and apparent grief are being treated in ways that can be justified.

That question does not have an easy answer. But the evidence increasingly suggests it deserves a serious one.
