Exercise is usually discussed in terms of cardiovascular health, muscle, and weight — outcomes that are visible and easy to measure from the outside. The evidence for what exercise does to the brain is, in some respects, even more striking, and it centres on a single protein: brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which researchers have informally nicknamed "Miracle-Gro for the brain" because of the range of growth-promoting effects it appears to trigger in neural tissue. Aerobic exercise reliably increases BDNF levels, and the downstream effects of that increase touch memory, mood, and the brain's capacity to physically change itself.
What BDNF Actually Does
BDNF supports the survival of existing neurons, encourages the growth of new synaptic connections between them, and in a small number of brain regions — most notably the hippocampus, a structure central to memory formation — appears to support the generation of entirely new neurons in adulthood. Animal studies have shown that exercise-induced increases in BDNF correlate directly with improved performance on memory tasks, and that blocking BDNF activity pharmacologically eliminates the memory benefits exercise would otherwise produce, evidence that BDNF is not simply associated with the effect but appears to be a necessary part of the mechanism producing it.
The Hippocampus Connection
One of the most cited human studies in this area followed older adults through a year of moderate aerobic exercise and found measurable increases in hippocampal volume compared to a stretching-only control group, whose hippocampal volume continued the gradual decline typically associated with normal ageing. A one-year increase in the size of a specific brain region from exercise alone is a striking result in a field where structural brain changes are usually slow and difficult to produce through any intervention, and it has been substantially replicated across subsequent studies using different exercise protocols and different populations.
Beyond Memory: Mood and Attention
The BDNF pathway is also implicated in exercise's well-documented effects on mood. Reduced BDNF signalling has been observed in some studies of clinical depression, and several antidepressant medications appear to increase BDNF levels as part of their mechanism of action, which has led some researchers to view exercise as acting on a broadly overlapping biological pathway to certain pharmacological treatments, though exercise is not considered a replacement for clinical treatment in moderate to severe depression. Separately, studies in children and adolescents have found that even a single session of moderate aerobic activity can produce short-term improvements in attention and executive function on cognitive tests taken immediately afterward, suggesting some of the brain benefits of exercise are not only cumulative over months but measurable within the same day.
How Much Exercise Is Actually Required
Most of the research showing measurable brain benefits has used moderate aerobic exercise — activity that raises heart rate meaningfully, such as brisk walking, running, or cycling — performed several times a week over sustained periods, rather than brief or highly intense but infrequent activity. Health guidance summarised by institutions including Harvard Health Publishing generally points to roughly 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week as the threshold associated with the clearest cognitive and mood benefits in the research literature. The body was, in a very literal biochemical sense, not designed to sit still — and the brain appears to be one of the organs that notices most when it does.
Encouragingly, the research does not suggest a narrow window in which exercise must begin for the brain to benefit. Studies in older adults who had been largely sedentary for years still showed measurable increases in BDNF and hippocampal function after starting a moderate aerobic programme, indicating the underlying biological machinery remains responsive well into later life. The brain does not appear to permanently close the door on this particular benefit — it simply waits for the body to start moving again.
